Immersive Air

A VR IoT solution to tackle indoor air pollution


Immersive Air is a novel solution for educating indoor air pollution through a fusion of state-of-the-art IoT and VR technologies. The Immersive Air VR experience, as demoed above, enables users to visibly see, interact with, and immersive themselves in their live air quality data. The experience was built using the Oculus Quest 2 with Microsoft MRTK, and the data is fed into Unity in real-time over WebSockets from a physical sensing unit communicating to a Heroku deployed NodeJS webserver. 12 time-series data sources are fed into the VR experience, including microscopic dust particle measures, TVOC levels, and CO2.

In addition to the VR experience, a web and mobile platform was also built using HTML/CSS/JS to visualise the live data over WebSockets via the chart.js library, with live rolling-correlation analysis also integrated on the platform. Finally, a custom Immersive Air Alexa skill was also developing using Alexa Skills Kit and AWS Lambda. To view the entire project, check out the video below.
